Ganoderma Lucidum Anti-cancer Clinical Evidences
Researches on Ganoderma Lucidum anti-tumor functions began in
the 1970s. It represents the most far reaching and in depth
studies involving the pharmacological actions of this miraculous
herb.
Today, it has become clearly evident that Ganoderma Lucidum can
contribute in no small way to the treatment of cancer.
The major health benefits of this herb are manifested in "subduing
tumor growth" and "restraining
the spread of cancer cells".
When used in combination with western medication, Ganoderma not
only helps to achieve better therapeutic results.
It also considerably reduced side effects caused by conventional medication.
Of course, Ganoderma application in cancer treatment does not assure complete
elimination of cancer cells in all cases.
However many research findings indicated that this fungus
exhibits a more impressive efficacy in preventing onset
of cancer than resisting cancer growth.
The dosages needed in the former case are much lesser than
in the latter case.
Mice experiement
A research conducted by Professor Ching-Hua Su of Taipei Medical
College has shed some encouraging lights on Ganoderma anti cancer
efficacy.
In his experiment, a number of mice were injected with 1mg
per kg body weight of purified Ganoderma polysaccharides every
day for a week. Then, they were all injected with cancerous
cells.
The experiment result showed the number of cancerous cells
remained in the bodies of this treated mice group was only 4%
of that of the control group, mice without the
preventive treatment.
This clearly showed that Ganoderma is not only effective
in preventing the onset of cancer but also aids in discouraging
cancerous cells spread. It also contributes to lowering
the risks of relapse thereafter.
In Vitro experiment
Interestingly, the in vitro (outside the body) experiment carried
out by Professor Lin Zhi Bin of Beijing Medical College also
points to the same results.
In his experiment, Professor Lin cultured phagocytes (which
are capable of gulping down intruders and various harmful entities
found in the body) or spleen cells (the centers that produce
immunity cells) together with Ganoderma Lucidum polysaccharides for
24 hours.
When he mixed the culture with human leukocytes (HL-60), he discovered that the culture could significantly subdue the proliferation
of leukocytes and gradually exterminate them.
Fortifying immune system
From cellular, animal or in vitro experiments, we can arrive at
a conclusion. Through primarily "fortifying the
immune system" and without harming normal cells,
Ganoderma Lucidum could reinforce our immune defense
abilities in identifying and wiping out abnormal cells.
This includes revitalizing phagocytes, neutrophils, natural
killer or NK cells, T-cells, antibodies, etc. and encouraging
their proliferation.
Apart from that, it also revitalizes dendron cells as well
as enhances the secretion of corresponding hormones of
immunity cells, such as Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha, Interleukin-1,
Interleukin-2, Interleukin-6, and Interferon Gamma and revitalizes
them.
In this respect, the primary active constituent is Ganoderma
polysaccharides.
Ganoderma cancer treatment
As Ganoderma Lucidum efficacy in prevention and
treatment of tumor stems from its ability to fortify immune
system, it is beneficial in guarding against practically all
sorts of cancer diseases.
Clinical researches have shown that the use of Ganoderma Lucidum
with surgical removal, radio therapy, and chemo therapy are
effective in improving the conditions of stomach cancer, lung
cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney
cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovary cancer, uterus
cancer and blood cancer (leukemia).
A recent animal experiment conducted in Japan indicated
that Ganoderma Lucidum is helpful in subduing the proliferation
and lesion or pathological changes of cancer cells in colon.
An in vitro experiment carried out by Clarian Health Partners,
a prominent hospital in US, also confirmed that Ganoderma Lucidum
is capable of subduing the vitalities of breast cancer cells
and prostate cancer cells.
During the International Edible Fungus Research Convention
held in Miami, USA early March 2005, research paper submitted
by a Japanese researcher also points Ganoderma benefits for prostate problems.
It stated that Triterpenes
in Ganoderma Lucidum are helpful in prevention and treatment
of prostate cancer and prostate enlargement through its ability
in subduing the vitality of 5 alpha - reductase.
